Psalm 19 - SHOWER OF SURPRISE

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY-

This great book is the best gift God has given to man. But for it, we could not know right from wrong. (Psalms 19:8)

-- Abraham Lincoln, Christian Reader, Vol. 33, no. 5.

PSALM 19

GOD REVEALS HIMSELF IN CREATION (VV. 1‑6), IN THE SCRIPTURES (VV. 7‑11), AND IN YOUR HEART AS YOU WORSHIP HIM (VV. 12‑14). To be properly "educated" in spiritual things, you must seek to master three books: THE BOOK OF NATURE, THE BIBLE, AND THE BOOK OF HUMANITY. A scientist studies the book of nature and a psychologist the book of human nature, BUT IF THEY IGNORE GOD'S BOOK, THEIR CONCLUSIONS MAY BE WRONG. KEEP BALANCED. ALL TRUTH IS GOD'S TRUTH.

The goal of all study IS A KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS CHRIST AND OF YOURSELF. Verses 7‑11 tell you what the Bible can do for you if only you will read it, meditate on it, and obey it. The better you understand your Bible and obey it, the more you will appreciate God's creation and the better you will understand yourself and others. God's Word is the basic book.

OPEN EACH DAY BEHOLDING GOD'S GLORY IN JESUS CHRIST (v. 1). Enter each day with the DEVOTION OF A BRIDEGROOM AND THE DETERMINATION OF AN ATHLETE (vv. 4‑5). AT THE END OF THE DAY, WHAT YOU HAVE DONE WILL PLEASE HIM (v. 14).

SHOWER OF SURPRISE

One August night, my children dragged me to the backyard to watch a meteor shower. I reluctantly joined them thinking, I have so many details to tend to before we leave on vacation. I don't have time for idleness. Suddenly, golden fire balls streaked across the blackness. "God made this," I whispered. It was a rare moment. Not because of the sight, but because I stepped beyond my familiar world into one of wonder and discovered the Creator in the midst. Could it be God filled the world with such beauty to lift people like me away from our obsession with details--to touch our lives with a magnificent awareness of himself? (Psalms 19:1)

-- Sue Monk Kidd, Today's Christian Woman, "Heart to Heart."

(Psa 19 NIV)

THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD; THE SKIES PROCLAIM THE WORK OF HIS HANDS. {2} Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. {3} There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. {4} Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, {5} which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. {6} It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat. {7} The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

{8} THE PRECEPTS OF THE LORD ARE RIGHT, GIVING JOY TO THE HEART. THE COMMANDS OF THE LORD ARE RADIANT, GIVING LIGHT TO THE EYES.*

{9} The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. {10} They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. {11} By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. {12} Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. {13} Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. {14} May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, MY ROCK AND MY REDEEMER.
